Leadership

Managing a shipbuilding project can be daunting – there are so many elements to keep track of, personalities and businesses to unify, different stakeholders to satisfy, and chaos to control. MARTEC Marine can help by finding all the right people for your project, bringing them on board fast, and providing the necessary leadership for successful collaboration.

Dave Longdale, President of MARTEC Marine since its inception in 1982, has provided senior management services to the shipbuilding industry in Canada and internationally covering all aspects of the shipbuilding cycle. He maintains a global network of contacts for designers, owners, major equipment package venders and shipyards that can be brought together to the complete integration of equipment, skill, resources and facilities to ensure a successful project.

Experience

Navy AGOR 74m Research Vessel

MARTEC Marine provided program management during design and contract negotiations for two US Navy AGOR 74m Research Vessels from 2009 to 2012 for Dakota Creek Industries in Anacortes WA, USA. We also provided the project management for the University of Delaware/Science Foundation ICES compliant 46m Research vessel “Hugh R Sharp” from design to delivery in 2005 also at Dakota Creek.

Both designs had very low radiated and environment noise requirements which were successfully met. Plug-and-play science packages such as the ones used in this project are very relevant to OPV/OPC design today.

This was a valuable experience working with the US Navy NAVSEA, who were a model of cooperation and realism.

74 m OPV for the Government of Mauritius

In 1996, Western Canada Marine Group (WCMG), a Canadian EPCM company, was prime contractor for a 74 m OPV for the Government of Mauritius. The competition from international Naval Constructors was fierce. WCMG contracted the Chilean Navy Shipyard for the construction. Over 100 BC companies supplied goods and services on the project. Canadian Government agencies provided considerable support during the project.

MARTEC Marine provided WCMG with Executive Management throughout the project. During this period, we assisted in contract negotiations between Irish Government and UK Shipyard, Appledore for two 78m OPV’s of a similar design to the WCMG MOPV. A total of 7 similar Canadian-designed OPV/OPC have since been delivered to the Irish Navy.

The biggest challenge was managing the 10 shareholding companies with diverse interests in the project, however we are proud to say that the vessel was delivered on schedule and budget and performed according to the contract.

Please ask us about our past projects - we will be happy to share further examples of our success stories upon request.
